I did go with my family for a Friday morning service at the big United
Congregational Church
in Taung (all the village "walk to" congregations
travel to the big church
for Easter and Christmas services).
You can see the family women in their
church uniforms; there are about
five
different uniforms within the church
indicating the different status of
the women; i.e. young woman, mature woman
married, woman unmarried,
Sunday school teacher, "Soldiers of Christ". It seems
as if all the
major
religious congregations have a uniform, so Sundays are
colorful days
with
people walking or on taxis going to their churches; one
with beautiful deep purple
cape, one with gold short cape, one
white with
bright red trim and red
cape.
Everyone in my area identifies themselves as being Christian and
there are
Catholics, Seventh Day Adventists, Episcopalians, Methodists, Baptists…not
sure what others. Singing religious songs is an important part of the
culture. Daily
school assemblies, teachers' meetings, funerals, any gathering
includes several
hymns (and everyone seems to know all the songs) so they
aren't specific to
any one congregation. The harmonies and rhythms are beautiful
and interesting
and
it seems as if everyone really sings.
